Our First Medal - Oakengates 5k - where it all began

Zero waste medals are based in the rural county of Shropshire or which there are loads of incredible places for running events!

This includes the flats of the Telford town park to the undulating and at times unforgiving Wrekin, theres some running space for every type of runner. From Ultra with the T50 route to Park Runners which leaves from the very centre of the town park.

So why not a race? Of course there's loads of great races that happen in Telford and one that we'd especially like to mention is the Oakengates 5k!

Not just a great event (we know personally from the whole team running it) but a pleasure because we where honoured with the opportunity to create their very first wooden medal.

Doesn't the golden glow just warm you right up!

This medal wasn't just their first wooden medal but technically speaking it was one of our firsts too!

Although it has a pretty standard look like a few of our races go for this wooden medal caused quite a few hiccups along the way.

To someone who hasn't done laser etching before this would look like a relatively simple task of popping an image onto the wood but actually the complexity arose from having a standard image of the crest which initially was low res so had to be re-drawn (free of charge of course, we don't charge for design) and then we had to marry that with nice bold text.

The medals were well received by most but this was the turning point for us to use our reusable plastic clasp. We found that stitching the ribbons was actually a health and safety choking hazard so we opted for a quick release clasp.

I hope you've enjoyed this little peek into our origin story from where it all began. Stay tuned for more great updates and blog posts about all our projects.
