Custom Wooden Medals for GO THE DISTANCE!
Custom Wooden Medals for GO THE DISTANCE!
GO THE DISTANCE! was not a one-day race where everyone crossed the same finish line at the same time.
It was a four-week community walk/run created by FUN 4 YOUNG PEOPLE to encourage movement, wellbeing and participation.
That meant the medal needed to recognise consistency, effort and involvement — not just speed.

About the Event
GO THE DISTANCE! was organised by FUN 4 YOUNG PEOPLE as a physical distancing fun walk/run.
Instead of asking everyone to complete the same course on the same day, participants could get involved over four weeks.
This made the event more flexible and accessible, especially for families, young people and community groups.
The Design Challenge
For a flexible community event, the medal has a slightly different job.
It needs to give people a clear sense of completion, even when the event is spread over several weeks.
The organiser needed a medal that could:
- Feel fun and positive for young people.
- Recognise participation as well as distance.
- Keep the branding clear and easy to understand.
- Work within a sensible community event budget.
- Support a more sustainable approach to event rewards.
When an event is spread over time, the medal becomes the moment of closure. It helps participants feel they have properly finished something.
Why a Wooden Medal Worked
A custom wooden medal was a strong fit because the event was about community, movement and wellbeing.
Wood gave the award a warmer feel than a standard imported metal medal, while still keeping the design practical and affordable.
- The natural wood gave the medal a sustainable base.
- The round shape made the design simple and clear.
- The blue ribbon added colour and energy.
- The printed event branding made the medal specific to GO THE DISTANCE!
- UK production helped keep quality and timing easier to manage.
The Medal Approach
The final medal used a round wooden base with the GO THE DISTANCE! event branding and a blue recycled polyester ribbon.
The design was kept bold and easy to read. That matters for events involving young people because the medal should be understood quickly.
A simple design also helps the medal work better in photos, certificates, social posts and follow-up communication after the event.
For community events, clear branding usually beats complicated artwork. People should know exactly what the medal is for at first glance.
What Other Event Organisers Can Learn
GO THE DISTANCE! is a good example of how medals can support flexible participation events.
If you are organising a community walk, charity challenge, school event or virtual distance event, ask:
- Does the medal make the event feel complete?
- Is the event name clear enough for photos and social sharing?
- Does the ribbon colour match the tone of the event?
- Is the design simple enough for children and families to connect with?
- Does the medal recognise participation, not just performance?
- Can the medal be produced reliably within the event timeline?
For community events, the strongest medal is often the one that feels inclusive, clear and easy to connect back to the event.

The Final Result
The finished medal gave GO THE DISTANCE! a simple, clear and sustainable award that matched the event’s purpose.
It helped mark the end of a four-week challenge and gave participants something physical to recognise their effort.
For community events, that physical recognition matters. It turns participation into a shared achievement.
